Case Study:  Trapped Driver

Car One approaches an intersection at about 40 mph. The traffic light has been red for some time. While the driver of Car One was still about 200 feet away from the intersection, he saw that the light was about to change.  He figured the light would turn green by the time he reached the intersection, so he did not slow down.

Car Two was approaching the intersection from the right at the same time. The driver had slowed to let Car Three complete a left turn in front of him. As a result, he was still in the intersection when the light changed. He was hit broadside by Car One.

The driver and the passenger in Car Two were both seriously injured. The driver of Car One, who was not wearing his seat belt or shoulder harness, suffered broken ribs, internal injuries, and massive facial cuts when he hit the steering wheel and windshield.
